Blue Liner Flows Review | USGS Stream Gauges

Traveling more than an hour to go fly fishing often requires some planning. Weather and water levels are the two most important variables to understand before heading out. Everyone has their favorite weather apps, but this year more than ever, having a good understanding of water levels has been non-negotiable.

All water level data originates from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Surface-Water Data, which monitors over 13,000 stream gauges across the U.S. and more than 350 in Pennsylvania. The USGS has been transitioning to a new online interface over the past five-plus years. The updated look and feel have left some old features behind while adding new ones. I hate it.

So, I’ve been on the hunt for a desktop and mobile app that delivers USGS backend data through a clean, easy-to-use interface. Blue Liner Flows offers a solid solution for iPhone, iPad and Mac users, with apps built for both platforms. Most importantly, favorites and preferences sync across devices. There’s a free version, but I’ll be reviewing the $6.99 annual paid version.

Key features include: favorites, state selection, map view, latest data overview, discharge in CFS, discharge in feet, average annual discharge, various time views, weather forecasts, alerts, temperatures (station-dependent), turbidity (station-dependent), and other data specific to each gauge.

I found the app very easy to set up on my Mac. Once configured, all my favorites and alerts synced automatically to my iPhone. You don’t need both devices—an iPhone alone works just fine. I especially liked navigating between the state, favorites, and map views. It’s fast and intuitive. Most views display the key information I’m looking for, including directional arrows indicating whether water levels are rising or falling.

I am looking forward to more updates from the guys.

Trip Report: Northwest Michigan Fall Fly Fishing

The rivers and streams of the northwest portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan are teaming with wild salmonids. Bruno and I discovered this almost by accident in October 2010 when we detoured to NW Michigan on a trip to the Salmon River in Pulaski New York after Tropical Storm Nicole blew the Salmon River out to 20,000 CFS.

Bruno called fellow board member Acristickid on his cell phone as we headed up Route 79 North from Pittsburgh and Acristickid told us to turn left when we got to Erie and head for Michigan!

The heart of the fishing near Wellston in Northwest Michigan is 8 hours driving time from Pittsburgh which compares favorably to the seven hour drive to Pulaski New York for anglers in Western Pennsylvania. We fished October 10-12 in 2010 which was a little late for the salmon in Michigan.

This year Bruno, Brian Charlie and I made our way north again. We fished September 18-21 which was close to the peak of the Chinook Run. The Coho salmon also were out to play this year. Our trip was a little early for the steelhead, they run late October to late April. Part of the appeal of fishing in Northwest Michigan is that nearly all of these fish are naturally reproducing from ancestors stocked decades ago. The spawning gravel in these rivers and streams is immaculate!

We caught a few King salmon on our own, but the best day of the trip was our day our on driftboats with guides from Schmidt Outfitters on the Manistee River. They put us over a Coho hotspot. Bruno and I hooked and landed many of these wonderful fish that really love to take a fly. We also hooked a few King salmon with the guides, but the landing of Kings was more difficult.

"We had a wonderful trip. I have to also thank the guys from Ray Schmidt Outfitters. Guide Nick Homan was awesome to spend the day with. He did a great job and provided the best river lunch I...

To keep up with a some of regional fly fishing I turn to few favorite blogs. I have been looking for a few more new blogs and recently received some help from the forum. The number that have turned up will keep me busy for the rest of the summer.

troutrageous.jpg
I have added to the list a few of my favorites as well. Lately I have taken time to follow Troutrageous. Michael over at Troutrageous is out of Limerick, Pennsylvania and takes time share some real good posts on fly fishing gear reviews, Tenkara and best bets for 100 degree days. I smell a beer post!

Another prolific blogger is The Jersey Angler. You will find a lot of fun posts and photography on some of the fly fishing happenings over in Jersey, but can keep up with trips out west as well. Also out of Jersey is the blog Fly & Fin. Seems like both these guys are having fun this week out in Yellowstone while we are sweating out in the heat.

One not to be overlooked is the blog Mr. Brownliner for fans in Pittsburgh with his musings on fly fishing for carp, trout, bass and drum.

What I like best is the diversity of thought from all these local bloggers. It is not just about their fly fishing adventures, but also includes life's little journeys too! Here is a some fly fishing blogs in the region. Feel free to add to the comments on others that I should know about.

I caught up with Tim Flagler at Tightline Productions about his recent Hendricksons video. I couldn't help but post this right away as the macro video on this is awesome. Tim shared with me that he started with this video about two years ago and took quite a bit of effort to produce. Much of it was completed in fish tanks to get the best light and control of the environment.

Tim collected Hendrickson nymphs and duns from the South Branch of the Raritan River near Califon, NJ. Tim does not claim to be an entomologist, but is pretty certain that these are all Hendricksons (Ephemerella subvaria).

Great details and nice job.

Tim Flagler can be contacted through the company website at Tightline Productions.

The Fly Fishing Show in Philadelphia - 2011

The Fly Fishing Show in Philadelphia was held the the weekend of March 5 & 6, 2011. This is the first time the show was held at the Valley Forge Convention Center and sounds like it will be part of the schedule for next year as well.

Being that is was the first year there was a little smaller with the number of vendors, booths and presenters. Chuck Furimsky, Fly Fishing Show Director, made sure there was plenty of the star power and regulars to make it a very good first year and plenty to go around for all. Joe Humphreys, Bob Clouser, Eric Stroup, Mike Heck, Bob Mead, John Collins, Shawn Davis, Anthony Giaquinto, Scott Cesari, Dave Brandt and Don Bastian to name a few

A lot of booths included TCO Fly Shops, Simms, The Evening Hatch Shop, Valley Forge TU, Main Line Fly-Tyers, Project Healing Waters, AA Outfitters Fly Shop and plenty more.

What I liked most about the show was just how well attended it was by Paflyfish members. I was into the show for than a few minutes and found Heritage Angler and LRSABecker eyeing up the hall looking for some deals. I'll let the video tell the story. More pictures are posted on the Facebook Fanpage : http://www.facebook.com/paflyfish

Nice show and looking forward to getting back to Philly next year as I am sure this will really grow!

The Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, NJ - 2011

The Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, NJ was well attended by many from all over the region. Plenty of vendors filled the exhibit hall and seminars were busy as well by Saturday. Some snow on Friday morning seemed to slow up a few on the first day. I arrived to the usual filled parking lots on Friday afternoon.

I enjoyed seeing a lot of friends and members from Paflyfish. I do think many held off from going to Somerset and are waiting for the Philadelphia show in March.

There was a lot of conversation about the Philly show. It is rather close to Somerset and only six weeks away. Seemed like many vendors were planning on attending, but not all.

The results from Friday seemed encouraging for many vendors. One of the destination guides felt he would have sold all his summer trips by noon on Saturday. One of the fly shops shared that they had been doing pretty well selling boots and waders first day. I helped out first thing Saturday morning with my own boot purchase.

I enjoyed meeting Steve at Rise Fishing Company. Steve and his wife Amanda have recently started a rod company focused on designing rods that are user friendly for anglers to match their skills and fishing situations. Rise also has pledged to donate 20% of their profits to conservation efforts. It was good to see Ernie Pribanic from Laurel Highlands Guide Services in the both helping the team from Rise as well.

Meeting up with friends and getting introduced to new folks is always the best part of the show, but I especially enjoyed getting to the seminars this year. Gary Borger was my favorite with his Fishing the Film discussion. Going to try and hopefully catch George Daniels if he is presenting in Philadelphia in March.

If you are considering going...

Time to get out

When ice makes it's impenetrable mark on the streams, anglers focus more of their time fly tying, bantering about spot burning and taking advantage of the upcoming outdoor shows. Like in years past these shows provide a good opportunity to see much of the new waders, boots, rods, reels and fly tying gear. As for me it is a good chance to escape from a little cabin fever.

mikeheck.jpg
Mike Heck, Orvis Trout Guide, fly fishing instructor and author of "Spring Creek Strategies" will be participating in several of these shows. Mike will be providing fly tying demonstrations and signing books at Somerset and Philadelphia Fly Fishing Shows. "I love meeting up with people at these shows. Especially all the people I normally am only able to converse with online," says Mike. He will also be helping out at the National Capital TU Chapter Angling show in March as well.

The Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, New Jersey has been a big success for many years and will showcase other notables as Bob Clouser, Lefty Kreh, Dave Whitlock and Eric Stroup. Like Mike, I look forward to getting to the show this week to meet up with folks from across the region. The Somerset Fly Fishing Show is this weekend, January 21-23, 2011.

New this year is the The Fly Fishing Show in Philadelphia. The show will be held in the Valley Forge Convention Center on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6. Similar in arrangements as the Somerset show; loaded with gear, guides and all the best fly fishing offerings in the region.

The Eastern Sport & Outdoor Show is one of the biggest outdoor shows on the East Coast if not North America and attracts tens of thousands of visitors...
