I don't pay much, actually any, attention to competition fly fishing but a post with this graphic popped up.

It can't be very often that a 30 incher is caught in competition. Lake caught, I wonder?

I didn't realize comp fly fishing was managed like a kids' fishing derby.
Fish are stocked in most places in PA, does that mean anglers fishing stocked waters are akin to kid's fishing derbys?

I was being facetious but was surprised to see that trout were stocked specifically for the tournament.

With this being in Europe, it is almost certain that those fish were never fished to until the competition. Fishing opening day in PA or chasing the stocking truck is vastly different fishing than fishing for stocked fish that have seen some pressure. The former is not far removed from many kids' derbies while the latter can be much like fishing for wild fish.

I'm not anti competition at all. It's not something I'm interested in but I have zero issues with it. I was just always under the impression they concentrated on wild fish. That probably shows how little I've paid attention to it. When I saw an 800 mm fish was caught, it caught my attention.

I don't think that anyone will dispute that catching a 30" wild trout is a vastly different accomplishment than catching a 30" stocked fish.

Fly Fishing and competition are 2 things in life that should not meet.

Funny that they plant stockies to enrich the competition though. Not all that meets the eye is always what it may seem.

Every activity on the planet has some form of competition associated with it.

Do you drink beer? Split wood? Hunt? Walk? Jog? Play piano? Dance? Boat? Eat hot dogs? Bird watch? There are competitions for all of that. Does that upset you?

Why does flyfishing comps get under people's skin so much? Nobody is forcing you to participate, or even acknowledge them. They are doing the same thing you are likely trying to do, catch and release as many fish as they can under the amount of time they have to fish. If it bothers you, you shouldn't be fishing yourself, you are literally doing the same thing, just without turning a score card in.

I must have overlooked the intentional release of non native species for bird watching contests.

Pretty lame comparison.

Competition has no place in outdoor sports. I was disgusted to see the behavior of fisherman in the bass tournaments, then it was all the big buck contests and all the shortcuts and technology and cheating, poaching used to score.

Now it seems fly fishing is going down the same road. Give it a rest man, go out and fish for the pure enjoyment of it instead of bragging rights.

Doesn't get under my skin, I just think it's ridiculous to take what's supposed to be a sporting activity originally meant to procure food and turn it into a competition. I walk and eat hot dogs, I think competing in either activity is ludicrous as well. Now drinking beer, well that often leads to other ludicrous competitions that I'm all in on. 🙂

Shutting down open waters so that some can show off their alleged flyfishing skills is not very sportsman like!
Would love for you to show me where they shut down open waters.
