Crappie on the fly is cranking up here in the NW on our glacial pothole lakes, although the open system lakes with strong inlet stream volume are still weirded out by high water and colder than normal temps and will likely need another few days to a week to get going. I went out scouting on one of my home lakes yesterday and although I didn't really intend to do so, I ended up taking out enough decent crappie for 4 messes; about half of them in the 9-11" range. I simply lost control of myself for a bit...🙂
All fish came to what I modestly call Bung's Crappie Dart, (Bung was one of my high school nicknames), which is just a simple beadhead wet with a marabou tail, small estaz body and a couple turns of hackle at the head behind a 1/8" silver bead all on a 1XL #10 hook. All white is best but yellow or chartreuse also work well. Flip it out and then lift the rod at about the same speed as the seasons change. Watch the fly, when it disappears, lift the rod and there will be a crappie.
