Dogs and the Delaware

There's a local natural repo stream in my area, where EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to fish it there's somebody (at least one, often more) running their dog/dogs in the stream. There are two Dog Parks in the immediate area, but folks seem to need to use the creek too.
I've lost track how many times I've had to leave the stream because of dog issues. It's a shame, because there are some nice wild browns in this creek.
They probably get little fisherman pressure because of dogs 😂

Going to a stream to go fishing and finding dogs roaming all through it is such a letdown. It really sucks when you are already somewhere and people show up to let their dogs swim in the water just upstream of You. Another thing that chaps my butt is when kids show up to start throwing rocks into the water where you're fishing. There is really only one place this happens, but it happens so often that I don't even know how there are still rocks on the one shore. I wish people didn't let their kids do that.

I mean if it’s a non fisherman, I would assume the obvious move is start fishing there before first light. I guess my theory with public access places is I can never be mad at what other people are legally enjoying. But I can get there before them haha.

I agree. I want others to enjoy the outdoors like I do, but like I mentioned, there are TWO dog parks very locally where they can run their dogs without having to use the creek.

About two weeks ago, I was fishing a pool that always produces at least one good brown, when a guy shows up and lets his dog just jump in right where I was already fishing. I was there first. He says to me, catching anything? I said not yet, but the dog isn't helping me any. He says, well he is a water dog.

I thought about explaining to him what proper etiquette is, but I figured it would fall on deaf ears, considering what he already said to me. 😉

Some people like to fish. Some people like to take their dogs to frolic in the water. My brand of fun does not trump the fun enjoyed by others. I am never bothered by the legal fun of others who enjoy being out in the same public places as I.

Neither am I, but when their dog's "frolicing" infringes on my fun, that does bother me. Read my post again, where it says "I was there first". That dog owner should have respected that. He was a jerk, no getting around it.

My dogs are somewhat trained and it is a huge hassle. 🤣. When they hear the line get ripped off the water as a fish takes, they will blow both of your knees out trying to get to the edge of the boat and see what's going on. For the most part though, well-behaved.

One thing I will say if you're a Wade fisherman, if you make a comment or talk to my dogs as we're going past, they will jump out of the boat and swim to you to get petted. That's a slight problem

This is very true! The first time I set they got very excited, when there was nothing on they gave the WTF look, do better. Kray's dogs are awesome, they love the river.

Dear Board,

Many years ago, at the Acid Factory pool on the Beaver Kill where Horton Brook comes in, I stopped to fish at the parking lot across the old iron bridge.

I was fishing and noticed a visitor. It was a medium sized yellow prick eared dog. Kind of like a midget yellow Lab-GSD mix. He just sat on the bank until I came out of the river for a break. He ran over and I played with him, tossed a stick or two for him, and gave him something I had in my pocket to eat.

That was in the Spring of 1991. Every time I visited the Acid Factory Pool for years that dog would come and seek me out. There was a huge flat on the south side of the Beaverkill with a few houses scattered on it. I never knew where he came from, but I'll never forget him as long as I walk the sod. He was my Beaver Kill ace, and every day was a good day with him around.

I have a picture of him somewhere around here, if I can find it, I'll post it.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

No need to read anything again. I was talking about me not you. You’re free to get angry over what you want. I choose not to get angry over others enjoying their fun in a public place. Other than jet skies. Jet skies can try my patience so I avoid them. Dogs playing in water not so much anymore. Me catching a fish I plan on releasing when I’m not starving to death is not significant enough for me to get bent out of shape.

There’s a major difference between fishing with a well trained dog and one like you described below (although I do let mine chase geese, I hate those bastards). Guess I now have another good reason to fish with my buddy bc it keeps people who apparently hate dogs from high or low holing me 🤣
I don't like unleashed dogs wandering around the banks of trout waters. Some are too friendly and some are aggressive.

Fish it in bad weather when the dog walkers aren't out. I have a park local to me that has a small wild brown stream but has a trail adjacent to it that is just loaded with hikers, kids throwing rocks, and roaming dogs. I find the days that the weather sucks and the stream is cloudy otherwise the browns are super skittish and spooky. My best wild one went 14" and this is a jump across stream.
