Fish Kill on Clarion

All I see is this:
Is Pine Creek having a problem too?

After fishing Kettle creek last weekend, I swung over there to try it on Monday - for the first time this year
The water was higher than normal, but still fairly clear
Some flies were hatching -mainly caddis and sulpher
Figured I'd at least find a few rises in the softer water along the banks and tailouts
Didn't see a single rise all day
Cant recall that ever happening to me there.......

Where were these photos and videos taken? I'm not seeing anything on local news sites. Reached out to a few buddies who have heard nothing. Went down to Johnsonburg this morning and didn't see any dead fish but visibility is not perfect.
 
Had a friend who fished it last week and told me he saw many, many dead or dying fish on the Clarion. He said the river was up, so he couldn't see them all, but he said there was a lot. He has been in contact with PBFC about it and there have been a bunch of reports the office said.
 
Yes the papermill dumped something in the river,lots of dead brown trout found by guides ,fish comm and DEP investigation is under way but every time its investigated the problem is gone before DEP shows up,2 years ago Thursday night before memorial day they dumped and I found it at 4:45 am Friday morning, I couldn't see my feet in 12 inches of water,I took pictures and videos but DEP didn't show up till Tuesday, they do this every year and get away with it,I went back the following weekend to see if any trout were left and I caught a bunch on dry flys,this area I fished was approximately 3 miles down stream of there outflow pipe,even though this occurs annually there's still plenty of 20 + inch Brownies to be caught
 
I saw several sources on instagram. From jburg to ridgeway is the stretch that seems most impacted.

Unfortunately I can confirm this. Was up last Thursday and spoke with a fish commission officer and a guide at the boat launch in Johnsonburg. The guide had reported seeing several large dead trout in the days before. The officer had been walking the banks looking for dead trout but hadn't seen any that morning. We didn't see any dead trout between Johnsonburg and Ridgway but half way through the float the sky opened up and dumped buckets for about an hour. After the water turned chocolate, we did see one large brown 18" swimming in distress. Swimming quickly and erratically at the surface, porpoising several times. Tried to net and collect it for the officer but were unable. At the take out the guide said he had seen 4 dead trout before the rain. As of last Thursday the cause was unknown.
 
There could be a lot to learn from some basic water quality testing (pH, alkalinity, turbidity, TOC, etc.). Are there any drinking water treatment facilities that draw off the C in that area?
It seems the Clarion could use an active advocacy group similar to Mr. Anderson's LJRA.

There is https://www.clarionconservation.com/watersheds
I’m not sure how active they are in monitoring like that. They are - like other watershed organizations- focused on AMD primarily. Point source pollution events like the supposed one here are fairly rare.
 
i live on the river between Ridgway and Burg, I am often down by the river, have not seen any dead fish here, maybe whatever the issue, it is (hopefully) something that was not persistent and very local to the Burg area?

what I do know, is that yesterday, like clockwork for 7 yrs now, a helicopter came in flying low and slow over the water dropping BT pellets again. they are stated to be for a mosquito and black fly control program. And its great to not have any mosquitos or biting flies in our yard, BT kills off ALL insects that hatch in water.

BT is totally organic though, and does not kill fish, only their food supply

You might want to read up on bt. It does not kill all insects or it wouldnt be used.
