Went fishing after dinner two nights ago. Got a brown on a beetle, but otherwise a slow evening. Packed up my car at 9PM and then heard a big splash. I returned to the stream where enormous mayflies flew around getting eaten by catbirds and fish started jumping in the water. I got my gear out, but had no dries remotely close to the size of the Green Drake. Witnessing the hatch was an amazing experience.
After researching some YouTube videos, I tied my Green Drake version substituting for the tail, ribbing, and hackle with “what I have.” I actually do have olive dubbing, but chose “tennis ball colored” dubbing since a lot of the flies (not all) appeared brighter (when my headlamp was on).
I returned to the same spot tonight (at my wife’s chagrin that I went out so late). It was a successful night with another hatch, but much respect to you night fisherman: night fishing alone in the woods is creepy and quite challenging… BUT…it was worth it!
