Feel like this has been talked about before, but couldn’t dig it up, maybe it wasn’t, or not in this context.

I was under the impression the road was open back to a small SF lot and gate perhaps a half mile back, that allowed access to the SF and the gated SF portion of Lick Hollow Road. Upon seeing it in person, there is a large heavily posted gate blocking access, presumably installed by the cabin owners there, right at Ingleby Road. Clearly, I punted and went elsewhere the day I checked it out, but it seemed out of place. Usually the state preserves access to these SF lots. If it’s a private lane, that’s fair game, and I get it, but I wasn’t under that impression.

I’m sure someone knows the backstory here. Feel free to PM, if you’d prefer.

I know there was a significant controversy surrounding the closing/gating of that road for the sole purpose of getting the area designated as "Penns Creek Wild Area"- a titular change that conferred no particular benefit to anyone but inconvenienced many.

Is this in reference to the gate at Old Mingle and Lick Hollow Rd.? If so, I thought I was a genius last fall reserving my dispersed campsite at at top of Old Mingle, thinking I would have a short ride down to the crick in the morning. Only to find out that they had gated off the road down to the crick due to what Nocktavius said.

No, opposite (western) end of Lick Hollow Road, down close to Ingleby.

(You could access this same area that way, albeit a much longer walk because of the gate you mention.)

Interesting. I guess that would mean that road is maintained privately, at least in that one section. I'd be interested to see the Right-of-Way/Property map in that area to see who owns/maintains what.

Edit:

Looks like it is a privately maintained roadway that isn't within the public ROW or SF road network, nor is there an easement to the SF maintained roadway. Source: Centre County Parcel viewer. If I had to guess, the landowners probably didn't want to deal with people trying to access the SF.

I heard that the guy has even fired shots to protect "his road". It's a real shame. I think it has been this way for at least 3 years.

I’ve only ever seen one other gate that “posted” before. Poconos area. I didn’t dare mess with it, or this one. There’s a way to get in there the long way via public land, and I almost like that. Just was a gate where I wasn’t expecting there to be a gate. If it’s private, and the landowners have agreed on that management practice for their land, I support their right to post it, and respect it.

From what I was told by a friend other there as well as other property owners in Ingleby, it is a private road on private land. It’s been a year or two since we drove the jeep down to the gate.

Old Mingle was closed off as a result of the Wilderness Area designation and I will forever mourn the loss of that access.
