Recent Rain

Along with all of the rain we've been getting, it seems like there have been a lot of windy days throughout the month of May as well. Someone mentioned a while back about there being more windy days than usual. I always found the wind to be very annoying.

The wind combined with the rain recently has been brutal. From Friday into Saturday and now continuing today there have been a ton of tree limbs and even complete trees that have come down where I live, closing roads and knocking out power. Thankfully we didn't experience a power outage of more than 4 hours, and it happened in the middle of the night when it didn't matter, but I'm getting tired of resetting all the clocks 3 or 4 times a day!

The wind has always been bad when fronts come through, but now it always seems to last for several days every weather change. I was thinking of going and tossing some flies for bluegills and bass but just looked out the window and the trees in my yard were leaning sideways.

It's ironic, not that long ago we were saying how badly we needed rain, me included, now we're complaining about too much rain. We need to be careful what we wish for. 🙂

I couldn't believe how low and clear the mountain freestoner that I fished today was. It is crazy how fast they drop!

No. I did not, but I was on the same stream a week ago, and it was 52°. Given how the weather has been similar and we got more rain, I'd wager it is about the same.

Been real wet and cool up here in the North West part of the state. 39*f at 7am June 1st.

My favorite rod for fishing dry flies is a 6 wt. Been using it since the BWO hatches that started in late Feb and haven’t felt the need to downsize since- it protected 6x tippet just as well as my 4 wt. Maybe if PA stops feeling like Jurassic Lake for a week I’ll switch.

Another vote for 6wts.

It does everything well and doesn't scare fish as badly as a clumsy cast with a 3wt...

I fished a forested freestone wild trout stream on Sunday and the dry fly fishing was very good. The flow level was nice. Probably most people would call it perfect. But it was actually lower than I prefer.

The air temperature probably never got over 60F, but the trout were hitting dry flies and the cool weather made it very enjoyable to be outside hiking around.

How many more years do you think we'll talk about it? It's pretty humorous. Maybe we're more of an amateur meteorologist group instead of a fly fishing group.

The big stream trout guys only want some rain.

And the big river warmwater guys cry when it rains because the rivers become too high for wading and take a long time to recede.

Glass half full, whatever happens there's good fishing somewhere, so quit complaining and just go fishin'.

Best explanation I’ve seen of this phenomenon. Fish where conditions are the best, because typically, under all of the above circumstances, something, somewhere, is fishing well.
