Tom Baltz Patterns

Morning Everyone. Over the years I have tied and fished a lot of Tom Baltz patterned flies - Specifically the Paranymph, Iron X Caddis, ICSI Ant, and ICSI Midge but I have never found an actual "recipe" for his Bronzeback Nymph, CDC Caddis Pupa or any others patterns he may have produced. Does anyone by chance have those patterns? A google search led me to the aforementioned flies I already tie/fish but not the others.

This is from top 50 flies of Pennsylvania book by naguski. Great book as it has little blurbs with each pattern, nice to thumb through in bed

Agreed, very nice book, good photos and nice write-ups. Naguski taught an advanced tying class that I sat in on this winter. Nice guy, unassuming and a good tier.

Thanks for the info. I actually think I have this book somewhere but after a long haitus away from fly fishing/tying it might be a challenge to find it! I'll need to dig through hundreds of baseball bats, golf clubs/bags, etc.....🤣🤣🤣

That’s way too many materials for a nymph. I’ll bet you could catch just as many fish with a sexy Walt’s.

You also could put some thread on a hook and call it a fly. But what’s the fun of tying and fishing something like that? Sometimes it’s the challenge of tying a fly and fishing it that makes it interesting. I’d be bored if I only tied and used Walt’s worms and perdigons.

Maybe it was the way the pattern materials were broken down, but by my count excluding thread, the hook & bead, you need three:

Hare's mask - tail, abdomen, thorax, collar

Wire - ribbing

Flashabou - back & wing case

How many materials do you need for a Prince Nymph or Copper John, 5 perhaps?

I agree. I like to tie and try new flies. That's where the fun is for me. To each his own.

Very true! If all I tied were a few basic patterns I'd just buy them instead of wasting time tying them.
