Hey folks. With the impending heat wave, I was wondering what everyone’s experience is with local tailwaters like the Tully? Does it remain at all fishable in the dead of summer? I’d imagine midday it probably gets too hot, but are the mornings and evenings still generally okay to fish?

It may be too warm from the get-go. The lake has filled in, and I was told quite a while ago that the thermocline is at a level where there is less coldwater storage than in the 1980s and 1990s. Doesn't the USGS gauge have a temp reading?
It sure does but it looks like it’s been busted for a few days. However, looking at the data from this time last year I’d say you’re definitely correct. Bummer.

Given the amount of rain (impacting inflow rates of multiple tribs) that we have had, a true thermocline MAY NOT have set up yet. Additionally, if a bottom discharge isn’t being used to aid the release of the present roughly 300 cfs and if a need to release more does not require use of the lower gate(s), then minus that need the bottom discharge normally would not be utilized until the temp in the tailrace hits 68 deg F (20 deg C) at 8 AM for three mornings in a row.

The blue marsh dam site USGS gauge on the Tully actually records temp data, so you can look it up before you go. I wish more of them did that.
Unfortunately, the temp gauge is offline right now.
