Dear Board,

All I know is that my brother who is coming in from Colorado and I have drift boat trips scheduled on either Juniata or Susky for May 25th, and the 31st.

We've had 6 straight awesome trips with our guide over the last 2 years. Two the week of Memorial Day and one around Halloween each year. I hold out little hope for this year, at least during the coming week.

I just hope I can find some fishable water somewhere during the week, with or without a guide. My brother had a hip replacement done in April, so wade fishing is out.

I'm going to have to put my thinking cap on!

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Yeah, April is soon after a hip replacement, but after my 1st or 2nd, I forget which, I remember standing on the back of Stillhouse Hollow run, anticipating wading carefully for the 1st time. It couldn't have been over 2 months after. You gotta be careful, but it's certainly not out of question.

Dear Syl,

After his first hip replacement in 2023, he did two 10-hour drift trips and never sat down once in the boat. He followed the same exact same schedule this year, but two years later and the rehab isn't going the same. He has no intentions of wading until late July/early August. He's a stickler for details!

I figure I can sit his behind in a pontoon float tube with oars since I have two, and we'll figure something out though. Worst case, I'll get my hard boat out on a lake, and we'll find a way to bother some fish.

It just sucks because we have had a great time with the guide we float with, and we all were looking forward to these trips.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

This rain is great in the long term but in the short term it has really ruined my May fishing trips. Looks like another weekend of canceled plans!

When I had my hip replaced in February of 2022, the therapists at PT routinely evaluated my balance on one foot or the other.

Despite being WAY ahead of the curve in regards to recovery, range of motion, strength, flexibility, etc., they advised me to hold off from wading until at least May because you will NEVER have as good an outcome if you break an artificial hip.

I listened and adhered to ALL of their recommendations and my surgeon signed off on my replacement as mission accomplished this past April.

NOT wading temporarily is far from the worst thing in the world if it means a 100% positive outcome like I had....

Dear Bamboozle,

My brother had his first hip done before our first drift boat trips 2 years ago. He knows the drill and won't be wading until late August/early September after his most recent hip job. He's a stickler for rehabbing properly.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

P.S. I just knew our guide would cancel the Sunday river trip, but he came through with a plan B and we'll be creekin' somewhere in the lower Susquehanna Valley. It should be cool to fish a creek I've never really fished seriously before! 🙂

sounds like you have a great guide there -- he knows your brother is coming in special --- and he's hustling for you .... that's a gem.

Dear Jerry,

He really is a great guide, at least in the way I judge guides. He's skilled, we learn things, but mostly we laugh and joke and have a good time. The drift boat ride is icing on the cake to me, and frankly I'm sure my brother would echo those words completely. 🙂

We hope for more favorable river conditions next Saturday, so we can get on the Susky or the Juniata, but we'll take things as they go and have fun no matter where we wind up.

Fishing with my brother takes me back to riding bikes to go fishing when we were young teens. At almost 65 that's a good thing my friend!

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Tim,

on my trip up in mid April, i go north on I81, past Carlisle and around Harrisburg ... then along the Susquehanna -- until i turn left onto a country road --- on up to rt45 and woodward pa. as i went along your river - i was just amazed at how big it was. there were islands, brutal currents, dangerous looking shoals ... i could not believe how wide it was --- just a series of islands and side channels. i dont know if thats where people fish ---- but you better have a great trusted guide who knows what they're doing in that river.

i'd love to find a historical book about that area during the pioneer / early 1800's era.

Dear Jerry,

In truth, while the Susquehanna does look wide and vast it's just a bunch of little, tiny cricks spread out over a mile wide swath. For sure there are deeper holes and places that are unwadeable, but mostly it's just a bunch of little cricks when you break it down. 😉

You really do need to see it in a boat because doing it on foot is untenable. Once you are in a boat, and you can see where you are at in relation to the structure and current you just break it down like a 50-foot-wide crick and fish the obvious spots like you were on smaller water.

If you ever get up here in the Summer or early Fall hit me up and I'll see if we can book our guide for a day. You'll enjoy it and enjoy getting to see everything come together, and I'll get to see a dude who made it a point to go out of his way to look me up and fish with me 20 years ago that I haven't seen since.

It'll be a win-win, I promise you that! 🙂

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I know the rain is needed for the streams and to replenish groundwater. However there is a downside to all the recent rain and the expected rain this week, and no, I am not talking about disruptions to fishing plans. Instead, the real problem has been that the rains have forced my sons’ baseball teams to reschedule multiple games. If this rain continues, this spring baseball season is never going to end!

Until baseball season ends, I have no chance to get on the water.

I’m guessing everything is already muddy and rising quick. What a terrible year for fishing so far.

So here in Union county there was 7.3" of rain before today. That is 82% above the average here in May. It started raining again last night and the forecast for the remander of the week is an additional 1.4". Penns Creek has been over 770 cfs since May 1.

Actually, I am loving this round of rain. I was on a small forested freestoner the other day teaching a kid to fly fish (he caught some stockies) and the flows and temps were amazing for this time of year. Our small cricks are going to be SWEET for quite a while, and when they start getting too low, the big cricks will be good!

I fished a brook trout stream on Monday and the flow level was good and the brookie fishing was very good.

As always, the small streams fish best when the big streams are too high.

Count it a blessing. Last night my oldest finished off his senior season, taking a loss in the district championship game. Seeing the hurt in his face, not because of the loss, but knowing it was his last time probably playing the game he loved was heartbreaking. Cherish those times, because I would give up all the fishing in the world, to continue watching him play the game he loved. Goes too quick.
