Hello, considering a Winston 8 1/2 ' 5 weight rod. It's a 2 piece TU Model with a NS downlock seat with lacewood insert .
My question is , weight is 3oz. and from what I can tell it's from the 1995 catalog year because both 1994 and 1996 rods are listed at 2 1/2 oz. Researched lacewood and it's lighter than both maple and walnut , just throwing this out there of why the weight difference, curious here.
Anyone ever hear of the TU 8 1/2 ' 5 weight model ?
Thank you .

This is better suited for the "Gear Talk" thread, so I'll move it there now ....

Hey, I don't know about the rod you are considering, but I wouldn't sweat that 0.5 oz weight. If you're interested in the rod and the price is right, pick it up and try it out.
Hi, yes im more curious than concerned . I'm sure it's a nice rod and since Thomas McGuane spoke about it in his book " The Longest Silence " I'm interested in seeing how it fishes. My only other 8 1/2 ft 5 wt is a vintage Orvis Henry's Fork. Thank you for your advice .

I have an IM6 Winston 8 1/2’, 2 pc, 4wt rod, s/n 22xxx that was built on a Loomis blank in the 1989-1994/1995 time period. It has a down locking reel seat, with a walnut insert, and is listed at 2 1/2 oz.
(I’ve never actually weighed it on a scale however).

Offhand, I wouldn’t think that the 5wt TU rod that you’re considering would vary by 1/2oz compared to my 4wt rod, UNLESS the lacewood insert weighs MORE than my walnut insert. Maybe there is something else going on?

A few years back a guy who was a member on another forum that I’m on, posted this information there. I believe he had worked at Winston. (I made this screen print from what he posted there at the time. You’ll notice that he mentions some “speciality weights”. Could those have been those TU rods?

In any case, I’m with Josh, and wouldn’t be overly concerned about that rod’s weight. Those Winston IM6’s are worth their weight in GOLD. And we all know what an ounce of gold sells for these days! 😃

Thank you very much !! The serial number is in the 39xxx and was described as "Rare" and the weight isn't an issue , just was curious as rods a year prior and after in the catalogs were listed at 2 1/2 oz. Rod looks sweet and I've always liked those lengths in 4 and 5 weight rods.
Yes those Winston's are 👍

I just noted this Winston IM6 TU rod sold on EBay a couple months ago. Same length and wt in 2 pc as what you were considering, except with a Walnut insert, and listed at 2 7/8oz. 🤔.

Yes I just seen it, different seller and different serial number 52xxx as the one I seen that was 39xxx. This is the reason I'm curious and will check with Winston. In the 1994 catalog the 8 1/2 ' 5 wt. 2 pc was 2 1/2 oz., 1995 2 pc was 3oz. , and in 1996 catalog the 2 pc was back to 2 1/2 oz. . Where did the 2 7/8 oz. come from because according to all three catalogs the standard reel seat was downlocking NS seats with choice of wood . Interesting and curious.
Thank you for your input , appreciate it.
