furled leader and strike indicator

where do u put the indicator when you use a furled leader. on the tippet the furled part if so where on the furled. or do u just use the leader as the indicator thanks

I put it on the tippet part. If I have to put it any higher for deep water, I use the end of the fly line as an indicator. My furled leaders are relatively short.

I generally use tapererd flouro leaders so I'd not be much help with your question.

For those that use furled leaders, what's the advantage? Do you purchase yours or do you make them?

I was really liking them for a while, but as my cast improves, I find myself liking them less and less. They turn over nicely, I guess.

A few years ago, I originally got into them because I wasn't very quick with my blood knots. When my mono leader ran out of its tippet section, it took me too long to rebuild it. I'm pretty quick with that now, so I just use mono.

When I use an indicator, I attach it to the tippet, or if I am really fishing deep I attach it to a small diameter line one or two sizes heavier than the tippet. The thinner diameter line below the indicator sinks quicker and causes less drag on the flies. You can also use the furled leader as your strike indicator. Sometimes I put a little pinch or a couple of pinches of Strike Putty along the leader for added visibility. I’ve also been known to whip finish some hi-vis mono or thread on each section of the leader to act as a permanent strike indicator.

BTW, I read an article in “American Angler” about making furled leaders. I made a few out of mono and they work pretty well. It’s as simple as making a loop with a long strand of mono and twirling both ends in the same direction to furl (twist) the mono. I made a few out of regular mono and some out of hi-vis mono to serve as a strike indicator leader.
