Orvis layoffs

The problem may be that people who like to think they are outdoorsy but really only go to football games buy Patagonia and LL Bean jackets, not Orvis. I suspect they don't have the following outside of their core areas to warrant such extensive product lines.

This is the root of their problem IMO. Their everyday clothing and "lifestyle" items have always struck me as an attempt to make money off off the wives and families of rich anglers and bird hunters than a real attempt at grabbing real market share in a crowded category.

Make your s**t in the USA, problem solved

The sad reality is that if most consumer goods were made in the USA they'd be unaffordable. What was the estimate on a US-made cell phone? Something like $30K? Imagine what fly tackle would be if it was entirely made in the US with US made components...

All of my flyfishing tackle is US made (well except for my vintage Hardy reels which are English). Orvis touts itself as an outdoor lifestyle brand rooted in conservation but then outsources its manufacturing to the worst polluting East Asian backwaters. Hope the whole company goes under- their new rods are absolute trash anyway.

Only reason to run their stuff at this point is if you’re guiding idiot clients who can’t cast worth a damn and can turnaround all your broken gear within a week. Orvis to me is like that one kid back in elementary school who was so desperate for acceptance that he’d let “friends” borrow/break his s**t all the time with no consequences 🤣.

There are only a handful of rod companies that don't outsource any of their manufacturing to an overseas company. Sage does the same thing with Redington.

And your opinion of Orvis fly fishing gear is trash. It is top notch stuff. They are a family owned American company that provides many jobs and business opportunities here and the fact that you want them to go out of business because you have some weird hangup about them making dog beds in China says a lot more about yourself than it does them.

All my rods, reals, waders, fly lines were made here in the USA. Hooks are Norway and Japan.
Flies are from my desk so USA.
The entire fly fishing industry will be experiencing problems this year. The rods made in china will be the same price as the rods wrapped and made here. Waders will be the same.
AI and automation is the future of manufacturing.

Do our handsome sons really need 30 fly rods? 3 should be enough.

So if Orvis was to make the Clearwater in the US it would probably retail for double it is now. There would be no such thing as a low end rod. At that point, to adjust, the Recon and Helios would go up maybe another $200-$300 dollars.

a company that employs 1500 and been in business for 150+ years is bound to go through some changes. The hate they garner is hilarious to me… they sell all this stuff because people buy it and then they actually donate more to conservation than other companies (and have been doing so for a long time). I’m not buying a $2000 dog bed but I’m also not buying an Audi, doesn’t make either garbage. Plus orvis gear, rods and clothes for the past 10 years or more have been great. I even own one of their puffies so maybe I’m part of the problem haha

All the “I hope they go under” talk for an American owned company with American employees is talking out of both side of your mouth. If you don’t like their stuff fine but I certainly don’t want 1500 to lose their jobs, and no need to hate on a company for making a relatively small layoff because they need to

It is always disappointing to see people who want to work lose their job. These are people who have families and responsibilities, just like you and I.

FWIW, I have always liked Orvis and felt that they made a quality product. If I didn’t want to pay $90 for a polo, I just didn’t buy it. However, I have gotten some clothes from them (usually on clearance) and thought it was quality. I also like their tying products and have a Clearwater rod that casts nicely.

I also have always liked their customer service (had a quick rod repair through them), commitment to helping new fly anglers through the learning center, videos, and podcasts.
