The Cicadas are Coming…2025

Caught a huge rainbow on Spring on a cicada. Every bit of 20". Probably came up from Bald Eagle it was down that way. Jumped out of my net before I could get a picture.

Otherwise I didn't see any cicadas on the water nor did anything else rise to my fly. They are very loud though and lots of shells on the trees and brush.

If the cicadas are so loud that you wonder if you should have hearing protection, then you are in the right area...

So how long does this last? I can’t get up there until the 18th.

You'll likely be in good shape on the 18th, but they may be starting to wane. It's really hard to say. One thing to consider is that there are different tactics for various times of their emergence. Rather than try to explain it, I'll let Jonas tell you (if you have Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1ERn6Jg7aj/

FYI I was able to watch that without a facebook account.

Perfect. Sometimes permissions can be weird.

Would the Kish have them? Looking at maybe heading north for the day tomorrow.
I've heard reports of them on Lewistown area streams, but can't confirm. I'm heading up that way tomorrow as well. LMK if you want you want to meet up, as I have a few good leads. The weather forecast appears to be a bit "tricky", but I'm just gonna send it!

I was planning on heading up today, but a couple factors put the kibosh to that: blown out streams and a head/chest cold that is having its way with me. Suffice it to say, I believe the Brood XIV emergence will pass me by this time and I'll have to try again for Brood XIV when I'm 70 🤣 Between a ridiculously busy work schedule and copious amounts of rain, catching fishable windows for this emergence proved to be nothing short of challenging. With a round trip of 200+ miles, I don't have the luxury of just popping in.

Happy for those of you who were able to get out there and smash some fish on these terrestrial cheeseburgers. I'll look forward to Brood II in 2030 in far eastern PA. Perhaps in four years work will slow down and it'll have stopped raining by then!

I found cicada behavior puzzling though good for anglers. On a 25 ft stream, any number flew a gradual descent to the middle, hit the water and became helpless. I'm not so sure they recognize the difference between land and water (like when you see a mating swarm of midges or mayflies above a road) or perhaps they mistake a reflection of themselves for a potential mate.

flood stage cicada eater. Unfortunately no big fish were hungry along the banks.

$20 says you’re an insurance adjuster. Double or nothing…2 guesses but you’ll only need one has to how I’ve spent my Spring.

C’mon, you guys are much younger than I am. It’s only 17 years until the next Cicada emergence for this brood. I’ve been a big Flyers fan all of my life and have spent the last 50 seasons waiting for them to win their next Stanley Cup.

A few of us are or were insurance adjusters, not WG though lol

But we've been entertained. Alas, with less glory but other than Edmonton , no NON-original 6 team has more Stanley Cup appearances than the Flyers.
